Moving house is a new beginning many people perceive. The prospect of a new neighbourhood, a new home, and new opportunities can all be exciting! However, while some moves are made for good reasons, the idea of making a move is something that is known to be one of life’s most stressful experiences.

Moving can cause people to feel tired, stressed and emotionally exhausted even if it is going to be a smooth transition. The good news is that a better understanding of how and why moving is stressful can help to alleviate some of the stress.

So much pressure can be generated by moving

There’s so much more to a house move than packing boxes and arranging transport. It is usually accompanied by a lot of tasks to be accomplished in a short time.

There are utilities to call, addresses to change, and paperwork to fill out and deadlines to adhere to. Daily life goes on, however, Real work commitments, family duties and social obligations don’t stop when you move.

A lot of folks don’t realize the amount of brain power it takes to get all of the parts working together. Little things add up! What should be the first contents of the pack? What kind of furniture do they need for the new house? What do you need to discard or give away?

With a dozen decisions to make each day, mental fatigue can become an issue before even moving day.

    The Emotional Side of Moving

Stress doesn’t always go hand-in-hand with physical work. Moving also entails emotional issues for many individuals.

A house is usually related to recollections, behaviours and coziness. When you have lived in a location with you for several years, there can be mixed emotions when you have a desire to move on.

It can be frightening for kids to change schools or make friends. Uncertainty about adjustment to a new area/community can happen with adults. All of this is normal and frequently a part of the stress of moving.

It is easier to make the transition if you know what you are feeling, rather than if you try to suppress it.

Planning Early Makes a Big Difference

The best way to minimise the stress of a move is to prepare well in advance.

But it can be stressful to wait till the last week. Rather, divide the move into smaller projects that take place over a few weeks.

Begin by creating a simple checklist. Include tasks such as:

    • Sorting belongings
    • Updating important records
    • Booking moving services
    • Organising packing supplies

Breaking a task into smaller chunks and doing them on a regular basis can seem much easier than doing them all at once.

Get rid of clutter before packing.

A great time to go through your possessions during a house move.

In many homes, there are items that are stored that no longer have a function. In many homes, there are items that are stored that no longer have a function. This adds time and effort to packing, transporting and unpacking these belongings.

If you’re going to put something in a box, think about if it still has a function. Out-of-use old appliances in the kitchen or furniture that has not been used for years can be given away, sold or recycled.

Minimizing the amount of items you move can also help to decrease costs and make the process easier overall.

    Avoid doing everything yourself!

Far too many people try to do it all themselves and they end up over-stressing themselves.

Friends and family can help with packing, organizing or caring for the children on moving day. There is also a lot of extra weight that can be lifted when you get help from professionals.

Experienced movers are able to know what to anticipate during a relocation and can assist to make the process smoother. It is important to have a reliable moving company when moving a small apartment to a large family home as it helps to lessen stress and focus on settling in.

Focus on What You Can Control

Even the most planned out moves can come with unexpected problems. Carefully organized plans may be disrupted due to traffic delays, adverse weather conditions, or changes in plans at the last minute.

Instead, concentrate on the things you can control, instead of worrying about all the possible issues that could occur. Some good preparation, good communication and realistic expectations can make a big difference.

Allocating additional time in your schedule can also help avoid “little” mishaps from “big” frustrations.

Take time to get used to it

People are expecting to feel perfectly at home when once they reach their new home. In fact, adjustment is a process that can be time consuming.

Unpacking can take weeks – don’t worry. Familiarity with new routines must be established and new environments must become familiar. It’s perfectly normal for the new house to feel different at first.

The goal is not perfection, but rather to create comfortable spaces room by room. It is possible to establish a sense of normal more quickly by achieving small wins.

It can be difficult to move house but with preparation, realistic expectations and the right support it can be far less difficult.
